Project Solstice

Melbourne South East · Sloping Block

The Project

A sloping block with a side entry and an unusual footprint. The block's orientation created a lighting challenge: with the fall running the wrong way for a standard floor plan, natural light had to be designed into the layout rather than assumed.

We changed the footing design from slab to split-level stumps, which cut the engineering cost considerably and put more of the budget toward the build. The project ran through COVID lockdowns (restricted site access, supply disruptions, reduced crew numbers) and was delivered on time.

Design Features

Split-Level Stump Footing

The standard slab approach would have required significant cut and fill on this block. Split-level stumps let us work with the slope rather than against it, and saved considerable engineering cost in the process.

Side Entry Design

The block's entry point from the side rather than the front required a completely custom approach to the floor plan. There was no standard template to adapt.

Delivered Through COVID

Construction ran through lockdowns with restricted site access and supply disruptions. The job was handed over on schedule.
