What is a square?
A square is an area 10 feet by 10 feet, so 100 square feet. It is an imperial unit that Australian builders and real estate agents kept using after the country went metric, which is why house sizes are still quoted in squares.
One square is 9.29 m². Going the other way, one square metre is about 0.108 squares, so a 100 m² house is about 10.8 squares.
Check what the number includes
Two homes advertised at the same number of squares can feel very different inside. One figure may be living area only. Another may be everything under the roof, with the garage, alfresco and porch counted in.
When you compare plans, ask for the living area and the total area separately. A 6 m by 6 m double garage is close to four squares on its own.
